Sputnik I is Sandman's first final concept of a sand-art object with cyindric shape. Already in the early 90ies he experimented with bringing the floating sand between two glass cylinders. The troubles are in the material, working process and design. The first ideas were about ionian pillars. Facing a lot of small problems the project turned more and more into a technical one. The inspiration of a moving rocket was the solution. No wonder when Sandman always has been intrigued by science fiction comics and novels. The cylinders are held by cone shaped tops on either sides. That construction is nesting in the base. To turn the thing you lift the cylinder off the base, and set it back upside down. The sand blend contains black and white minerals with space red glitter. The glitter depending on the light situation glitters like myriads of stars. An aesthetic technical art piece. Cones are equipped with airholes for regulation.
